FREELANCE DESIGN FOR PUBLISHING AND DIGITAL MEDIA

FAQS: INDEPENDENT AUTHOR CLIENTS

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO HAVE A BOOK COVER DESIGNED?

I will send you the first cover visuals for approval within approximately 10 working days. This can vary during busy times, but I’ll always keep you informed.

When you’ve approved the first visuals and given me feedback, I can, depending on any amends, deliver the complete and final design within 5 working days.

WILL I REALLY GET UNLIMITED REVISIONS?

Yes! You can have as many revisions as you like until
you are 100% happy with the design.

WHEN WILL I GET MY FILES?

Upon request and within 30 days of the completion of your project and payment of your final invoice, I will send you the press-ready PDF file and digital files for your book.

WHAT ABOUT FONTS AND STOCK LIBRARY IMAGES?

Please be aware that when I design anything for you, any images I have purchased from stock libraries are licensed only to me and not to you.

This means that as my client you are only covered for the design that I have created for you. If you wish to create anything using elements extracted from the design I have created, reuse the design in another format, or to make amends to the design, you must purchase the stock imagery licenses. Unless you or I purchase an extended license, you may not reproduce the content more than 500,000 times in physical print form.

Unfortunately, I cannot supply the fonts I use if they are commercially licensed. I am happy to pass on information about where to buy the fonts used in your book if requested.

WHO WILL OWN THE COPYRIGHT?

Here's the boring legal stuff (sorry!)

All non-brand designs, including visuals, are © and the exclusive property of Rachel Lawston, trading as Lawston Design. I will include a notice on your back cover and/or copyright page that reads: Design © Rachel Lawston, Lawston Design. Please credit me where possible.

My non-brand designs are only licensed to you and cannot be re-sold, loaned to a third party, or distributed in any way other than the purposes they were designed for. Imagery used in my designs may have been purchased specifically for use in the project. Any additional use may be breaking the law.

If you secure a publishing contract and your Publisher wishes to use the design, I am more than happy for them to do so. The publisher will not need to pay me an additional fee, but please ensure they credit me on the cover and copyright page and that I am notified in writing. Any artwork created by an illustrator or images purchased for the design will need to be relicensed by the publisher.

WHAT STAGES DO YOU WORK IN?

The steps outlined below explain every stage of a book cover design in the order you can expect them to occur.

  • Step 1

Contact me to arrange your FREE consultation. This can be face-to-face if you're in London, over the phone, by email or FaceTime.

Your consultation will outline your aims and how you want to publish your book. Please feel free to send me any ideas you may already have. I can advise on the right package and format for your book and how it can be achieved cost-effectively. As soon as I have your  synopsis or final manuscript and your brief I’ll provide you with a firm quote. There is no obligation.

  • Step 2

If you are happy with my quote I will send you a simple contract. Once I have received your signed quote, contract and 50% deposit I will start on your cover visuals. I accept payment through PayPal.

You are more than welcome to take an active role in the creative process. If you wish to use an image you already own or have seen in a photo library that is possible. If you would like to use your own illustrations and I feel they would work well, that is also possible.

Whenever you would like to take an active role in the process I will give honest and constructive feedback. I want you and your book to succeed, so if I feel your ideas are unrealistic or inappropriate for your intended audience I will make you aware and we can work to find a solution.

  • Step 3

We will agree a time frame for when you'll receive your first 3 – 6 cover visuals by email for approval, (usually within 10 days). Once you have chosen your preferred design I will commission artwork or purchase imagery from a wide range of professional sources.

If your cover is a paperback or hardback I will create a back cover and spine, then add your back cover copy and barcode / barcode area (depending on your printer requirements).

Once everything is in position, I check each element in your design carefully and then send it to you for approval.

  • Step 4

Once I know you're happy for your final design to go to press I will prepare all the files ready for print.

When the files are packaged and I've received your final  payment, I will send them to either you or your printer. I’ll also send you all the open digital files for your future reference.

I aim to make my service as hassle-free as possible, so I'm happy to work with your printer directly if you prefer.
