70 Ways to Bullyproof Yourself

In the Spring of 2017, hybrid Author Jenny Alexander approached me to design an exciting series of children's non-fiction titles for her. In this guest post, find out about her experience with self-publishing...

I’m a hybrid author and one of the things I love about self-publishing is it means I can give some of my traditionally published books that have gone out of print a second lease of life.

This week sees the publication of 70 Ways to Bullyproof Yourself, my revised and updated version of The 7 Day Bullybuster, originally published by Hodder. It was part of a children’s self-help series that went out of print quite quickly, although the press reviews were amazing.

I published an updated version of the first one in the series last year, as 70 Ways to Boost Your Self-Esteem. I chose to start with these two on bullying and self-esteem because there still isn’t much on the market for children that gives them simple strategies for building good psychological self-defences, and I think the way we live now makes it even more important that they should be able to do that.

Rachel had done the covers for my adult writers’ guides, creating a brand style that could extend to all the different kinds of writing I do. She had created headers for my websites and social media, as well as business cards, fliers and bookmarks. I couldn’t wait to see what she would come up with for my 70 Ways books.

As it transpired, I was sitting in the Ceilidh Place in Ullapool drinking their excellent coffee last June when the first cover roughs pinged into my inbox, and I will forever associate the 70 Ways design process with that lovely camping holiday in the Highlands.

Rachel is a great communicator. She made me feel comfortable about offering suggestions and asking questions. She supplied lots of different colour variations for me to choose from and wrote some placeholder text for a strapline, which I hadn’t thought of adding - I liked it so much that I kept it.

70 Ways to Bullyproof Yourself is published on September 12th by Five Lanes Press. Full details https://jennyalexander.co.uk/childrens-books/general
